Best Home Chargers for Porsche Taycan
The Porsche Taycan comes with a Porsche basic mobile charger that you don’t have to pay any extra for. It’s a 9.6 kW charger and can charge the car from either a Level 1 or a Level 2 source. When you’re charging from a Level 1 source, it’s not a 9.6 kW charger, while it’ll deliver somewhere around 1 kW to the car and charge fairly slowly. Besides, the standard mobile charger is not Wi-Fi enabled, so you can’t enjoy the smart features that third-party home chargers offer.
The optional charging equipment provided by the Porsche called the Mobile Charger Connect is outfitted with the vehicle. It’s an expensive option, but it also offers a maximum power output of 9.6 kW and won’t charge your car any quicker than the standard mobile charger. It’s Wi-Fi enabled and has some smart charging features, so that’s what you pay for.
Best Home Chargers for Porsche Taycan
The Porsche Taycan can accept up to 11 kW of power from a Level 2 source, so the charging equipment that Porsche provides for home charging cannot deliver the full power that the Taycan can accept. If you wanted to charge your vehicle at full power, you’d have to get a more powerful third-party smart charger, like the ChargePoint Home Flex, the Pulsar Plus 48 by Wallbox or the Tesla Wall Connector.
You don’t need to buy Porsche’s charging equipment to charge the Taycan because any Level 2 charger that you can buy in North America has the same connector which is the J1772. In addition to that, the Porsche Mobile Charger Connect is way more expensive than the thirty-party chargers.
We’re going to pick the best powerful third-party home chargers for the Porsche Taycan. We need to note that it’s specific for the North American market because charging in Europe is slightly different.
1. ChargePoint Home Flex Charger (50A, 240V) – Most Powerful Taycan Home Charger
ChargePoint is one of the leading providers of EV charging solutions. They operate one of the largest public charging networks in the country. They also offer ChargePoint Home Flex which is their newest, fastest, flexible and future-proof home charger.
The Home Flex will charge anywhere from 16 amps to 50 amps depending on what you’re setting it to and how you’ve got hooked up.
The Porsche Taycan can accept 48 amps of power. However, a traditional NEMA 6-50 or 14-50 outlet should be installed on a 50-amp circuit and can only deliver 40 amps to the car. If you want to take advantage of the full power of the ChargePoint Home Flex, you must remove the NEMA 14-50 or 6-50 plug and either hardwire it to a dedicated 60-amp circuit or have a licensed electrician install a NEMA 14-60 outlet on a dedicated 60 amp circuit and attach a NEMA 14-60 plug to the ChargePoint Home Flex.
We recommend that a qualified licensed electrician do all of your electric vehicle supply equipment installation or modification work. EV chargers supply a tremendous amount of power to your car practically every day and quite often while you’re sleeping, so you don’t want to have any serious electrical problems at your home.
2. Wallbox Pulsar Plus Charger (48A, 240V) – Most Portable Taycan Home Charger
Wallbox is a European electric vehicle charging company that has been around for a long time. In Europe, they’ve built a good reputation in the industry for building quality products.
This Wallbox Pulsar Plus, a neat small unit, has been around for a while as well. Recently, Wallbox made some revisions to the unit, which allowed them to lower their manufacturing costs.
The Pulsar Plus 48-amp EV Charger is able to deliver 11.5 kW of power output which is more than the maximum 11 kW that the Taycan can accept. Hardwiring the unit is highly recommended by the company.
It has LEDs built into the face. When it’s charging, it has different colors to show whether it’s charging, waiting to charge, or if there’s an error. It’s easily recognizable what the unit’s doing at any time.
There’s an app available on the Apple store and the Google Play store where you can control the unit, change various settings and control your charging schedule. If you want to make use of a cheap night rate terrace, you can set the unit to charge within specific hours.
In terms of connectivity and connecting to the cloud, the unit can connect to your mobile via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
The Wallbox Pulsar Plus is one of the smartest, smallest, neatest home EV charging stations on the market, available at a fairly competitive cost.
3. Tesla Wall Connector (48A, 240V)
The Tesla Wall Connector is available from the Tesla online shop and can sell out from time to time. You can check the unit on Amazon as well. It’s available with either an eight and a half or eighteen-foot cable.
It’s compatible with model S 3 X&Y, works with any home electrical system, includes Wi-Fi connectivity, can be installed indoors or outdoors and offers up to 45 miles of range per hour of charge.
The charger is featured with an attractive tempered white glass faceplate. Attached to the charger is a new thinner and lighter charge cable.
The charger is recommended to be installed on its own 60-amp breaker, giving you the full 48–amp and 11.5 kW output at 240 volts. The charger should work with your Taycan via an adapter.
If you own both a Tesla and a Taycan, the Tesla gen3 Wall connector would be a good home charging solution.
Other Recommended Porsche Taycan Home Chargers
The aforementioned charging solutions are the most powerful on the market. If you’d like an up to 40-amp home charger with smart charging features, the JuiceBox 40 EV charger or the Pulsar Plus 40 EV charger could be a great alternative to the Porsche basic mobile charger.
Everything You Need to Know About Charging the Porsche Taycan
The Porsche Taycan is one of the best electric vehicles available today. Still, many people don’t realize it also has one of the best charging capabilities of any electric vehicle available. There are basically three levels of charging the Taycan: Level 1 charging, Level 2 charging and DC fast charging.
Level 1 Charging
Level 1 charging is when you charge your electric vehicle from a regular 110 or 120-volt household socket. The Taycan comes with an adapter that allows you to plug in your Taycan to a regular outlet. It will charge your car, but it will take a long time.
The Taycan has a very big battery, either the 93.4 kWh battery or the smaller battery (the 79.2 kWh battery). You’ll get somewhere around 1 kW of energy delivered to the vehicle per hour, so you can multiply that out depending on which battery you have. It can take somewhere between 75 to 85 hours to fully charge a Porsche Taycan from a Level 1 source.
Therefore, most Taycan owners are going to elect to go for faster charging at home. That would be Level 2 charging.
Level 2 Charging
Level 2 charging is from a 220 or 240-volt outlet. The Porsche basic mobile charger that comes with the vehicle has adapters for either 110 or 120-volt outlet or a 220 or 240-volt outlet. The 240-volt outlet adapter they give you is a NEMA 14-50 plug that goes into a NEMA 14-50 outlet.
The NEMA 14-50 outlet will be wired to a 50-amp circuit. In that case, you can deliver up to 40 amps (9.6 kW) of power to the car which is what the Porsche basic mobile charger can deliver. It’s nearly ten times as fast charging from a Level 2 source as from the Level 1 source, even using the same charger that comes with the car. However, it’s not Wi-Fi connected.
Level 3 Charging
Level 3 charging is actually called DC fast charging. It’s ultra-high-speed charging that you do not have in your home. You can’t have a DC fast charger in your house unless you want to spend $50,000 or $60,000.
DC fast charging is what you do on the road. There are DC fast chargers set up along major corridors and highways all across the country. Electrify America and Electrify Canada are two of the largest DC fast charge networks in North America. They’re setting up nationwide coast-to-coast networks so you can take your Taycan anywhere you’d like to go. These ultra-fast DC fast chargers offer either 150 kW or up to 350 kW, which is good for the Taycan because the Taycan has really robust DC fast charging capabilities. It has an 800-volt battery system and is able to accept up to 270 kW.
How Can You Charge Your Porsche Taycan on A Tesla Charging Station?
Tesla uses a proprietary connector that is different from what every other electric vehicle uses, so you can’t just plug your Taycan into a Tesla destination charger or a wall connector without an adapter. Luckily, there are companies that make them: Lectron and Tesla Tap.
Since the Taycan can accept 11 kW that is about 48 amps of power, and the Tesla wall connector or the destination charger can deliver up to 48 amps, you may want to make sure you get either a 50-amp or a 60-amp adapter for your Taycan. That way, you’re never going to have to worry that the adapter can’t accept that much power.
Tesla has thousands of destination chargers around North America. They actually have done a really great job building out this incredible network for Tesla vehicles to use. With a proper adapter, you can charge your Taycan on these Tesla destination chargers as well.
However, You can’t use Tesla Superchargers for the Taycan even with an adapter. You would be able to plug the Supercharger in the adapter and plug it into your Taycan, but it’s not going to work.
